Message from your Chamber

“Greetings from your Chamber! In August, we enjoyed a busy Member-focused month, holding events with visiting Victorian and South Australian Business Delegations, and hosting a lunch with the Thai Minister for the Digital Economy and Society, H.E. Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj.

With September now upon us, our focus shifts to the Hospitality and Tourism industries, with our a Phuket Sundowners and Panel Discussion planned for Friday 8 September, and a panel review of the Thailand Tourism Market to be held prior to the September Sundowners on Wednesday 6 September. With the high season just around the corner, we are keen to bring our Hospitality and Tourism members together for knowledge sharing sessions on how to make the most out of Thailand’s 50 billion dollar tourism market.

The last Saturday in September is one of the most important days on the Australian calendar, as the nation, and all Australian nationals living abroad, stop to watch the AFL Grand Final, and we bring you one of the biggest events of its kind outside of Australia.

Finally, we are launching the ASEAN AustCham Business Survey this month, where we expect a visit from Australia’s ASEAN Ambassador, Ms. Jane Duke. We look forward to bringing you more details shortly.

Wishing you a successful month ahead”

Australian property: the exception or the rule?

Paul Gambles, Managing Partner, MBMG Group, Bangkok

The huge rise in Australian residential property prices (the 8-capital house price index has more than doubled since Q3 2003, whereas Consumer Price Index inflation has increased by less than 40%) has prompted comparisons with Spain, where prices roughly doubled between 2001 and 2007 before moving pretty much back to where they’d started.
