February 2017 Issue 32

Message from your Chamber

"I would like to open this edition of E-Advance by thanking the Board, Sponsors and Members for the warm reception I received on starting this position. When asked why I made the career move, my answer has always been the same – it’s an important role in the Australian-Thai community – and I’m happy to report that it is living up to all expectations.

We have started the year as busy as ever, with a major event in the Australia Ball, various business meetings, and preparation for the Annual General Meeting, and members can expect the same busy schedule throughout 2017.

Most pleasing is being involved in the work behind the scenes, which wasn’t always visible to me as a Member in the past. In recent weeks our Board of Directors held meetings with a trade delegation from Queensland, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the Thai Customs Department, all with the objective of improving the business interests of AustCham Thailand’s Sponsors and Members.

We held our first Business Briefing at Servcorp in February, and plan to hold regular breakfast, lunch and evening Business Briefings in 2017. These briefings are organised to provide knowledge updates and sharing and networking opportunities for similar interest groups, so please reach out to me any time if you would like to suggest topics.

The next major event for the Chamber is the AGM on Wednesday 1 March at 4.30pm, at the Grand Hyatt Erawan. We look forward to seeing as many Members as possible to be part of building a better Chamber. "

Thailand in 2017: a Changing Investment Landscape

2016 was a challenging year for Thailand, both economically and socially. The death of the much-loved King, His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej, clouded a year also blighted by political instability, water shortages, and bearish domestic business sentiment. Although official figures have yet to be released, Thailand’s GDP growth for 2016 is expected to be 3.2 percent, the third lowest in the ASEAN bloc (after Brunei and Singapore).
