June 2016 Issue 24

"Last week saw the Chamber host the third annual Australian Alumni Awards. The event is a great illustration of the strong links between Australia and Thailand at a personal level with the evening celebrating the achievements of the thousands of Thai students who have undertaken higher education in Australia over the last 50 years. This year the Awards were fiercely competitive with a large field of impressive candidates nominated for recognition in all four categories– a full report and photos from the event can be found in this issue of eAdvance. It has been a busy month in the Chamber between events and meetings. We have received the first results from the 2016 AustCham Business Survey and are working with our AustCham counterparts to finalise the full regional report. In contrast to last year in 2016 members identified their top three business challenges as 1. Access to Skilled Labour 2. Government Bureaucracy and 3. Size of customer base; while the top three growth drivers remained largely the same 1. Thailand’s position as a regional hub 2. Proximity to customers and 3. Economic conditions in Thailand. The initial results proved very useful in a recent meeting between AustCham and General Dapong Ratanasuwan, Minister for Education, where planned improvements to the vocational education and training (VET) sector were discussed. The Minister sent a strong message that Thailand is committed to improving the VET sector by strengthening the curriculum and ensuring integrated workplace training in order to provide better trained graduates that meet the needs of business. He has asked his Department to work closely with local Australian business representatives to find internship opportunities for talented students. A list of sectors and target vocational areas is in the process of being identified with the intention of placing the first interns in November. We will keep you updated on these discussions!

Minister for Education

Finally, this month we highlight two causes supported by AustCham members who seek your assistance with these very worthy projects. The first, an Australian based initiative by Blackmores to raise money for brain cancer research and the second, a local story ‘Steps with Theera’, a social enterprise for profit coffee shop and café in Ekamai. This inspirational project supports young adults with special needs and members can get involved by donating items for the café kitchen and vocational training centre. More details can be found in Member News."

BREXIT is it the disaster the markets fear? by MMT

In a shock to investment markets, which had been increasingly confident Britain would remain in the EU, the British electorate voted by a 52%-48% margin to leave the European Union. Why do we call it human capital?

By the time we've been alive two or so decades, many of us will have picked up some skills, possibly a little work experience, hopefully some sense of direction. We might even find we are now reasonably attractive to an employer. We have become human capital.
