March 2016 Issue 21

"In this month’s eAdvance I am delighted to introduce your new Board for 2016-2017 and welcome two new Directors, Stuart Kelly and Karouna Sunthorn. Each of the Directors will be taking on individual responsibilities for the Chamber and these appointments will be announced next month. I encourage members to join the Directors on the sub-Committees when they are announced. Your input is vital to generating ideas, informing advocacy and in shaping the numerous activities and events the Chamber will undertake over the coming year. One of the first activities the Board will undertake is a partnership with our counterpart AustChams across ASEAN. In a first for any chamber the Australian Chambers will be uniting to benchmark what it means to do business in ASEAN. This will be both a follow up to last year’s business survey which provided an excellent insight into local business characteristics and as well as our first opportunity to look at ASEAN wide picture in the first year of the AEC. I urge members to take 5 minutes to answer the short survey when it is launched in the week beginning April 18. April will also see the Chamber run the annual two day visit Kanchanburi and Hellfire Pass for the Anzac Day commemorative services, there are still seats available although filling fast, so please contact the Chamber Office if you would like to reserve a spot. Finally, I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday period over the coming Songkran."

What we all want to know is will the market be up for the rest of the year?

2016 global share markets have started on a very weak footing, continuing the falls we have seen since the high of May 2015. As mentioned in my previous article this panic in global share markets started with Chinese shares falling heavily in the early days of January, a plunging oil price, and a tightening monetary policy in the US. Global markets eased further in February, continuing the major slump in January, but then enjoyed a strong bounce after bottoming mid-month.
