Message from your Chamber

Dear Members,

Welcome to the May edition of Advance. As we race towards the middle of the year, your Board is pleased to report good progress on a range of initiatives. Once again, we enjoyed the Embassy’s excellent support for our Sponsor’s Day on 17 May, and our focus on alumni is progressing well – in fact we have received substantially more nominations for Australian Alumni of the Year on 22 June.

You might recall in the March edition my fellow Director Chris Larkin reported on the work our Advocacy Sub-Committee is doing, including deepening ties with the Bank of Thailand. Each of your Directors will have a chance to write this column and report directly to you on the work they do. This month it’s my turn to report on a key commitment your Board undertook in 2017 – to beef up our sub-committees.

When I joined the Board last year, it was obvious that Directors were too thinly spread across the various sub-committees. With a busy office staff of only 7, the Chamber relies heavily on sub-committees to do much of its work.

Various sub-committees have come and gone through the years, which is understandable as our membership evolves and needs change. New Directors also bring fresh expertise and interests. This is a good thing; however it also means that opportunities are sometimes overlooked as we lack time or specific experience to pursue an idea.

This can be solved by recruiting more Members to our sub-committees. It makes sense for several reasons. First, our membership covers a vast array of expertise that should be mined to improve the Chamber. Second, our Members know best which sub-committees are relevant. Third, you have the energy and expert knowledge that a sub-committee needs to thrive. In short, there’s nothing quite like an enthusiast!

I encourage you to join our sub-committees, and suggest new ones. I was delighted when a similar plea on my LinkedIn yielded a number of enthusiastic responses. As a result, in April we formed the new Information & Digital Technology Sub-Committee, which is already planning its first “Recruiting for the IT Industry” event on 15 June. I would like to thank Dwight Willis of DollarSmart for his leadership here.

In 2016 I joined the Board because I felt my background in public relations and journalism could add value to our communications. In recent years the Chamber launched a new website and several social media assets, which need to be continually populated with fresh, relevant content. I felt we could not rely on our busy office staff to do all of this work; and so, once again, my LinkedIn post delivered! David Norcross of Lexicon Business Communications and Rob Hall of Dot360 agency responded to the call and joined the Communications Sub-Committee. They are already bringing invaluable digital marketing experience to the mix and we look forward to implementing their ideas in 2017.

In closing, on behalf of the Board I would like to thank H.E. Mr. Paul Robilliard, the Australian Ambassador, and his Embassy staff for welcoming our sponsors into their home on 17 May, quite possibly for the last time before they move to their new premises. It was both a sad and joyful occasion as we said farewell to an iconic building while celebrating memories of AustCham’s first 40 years.

Yours sincerely,

Stuart Kelly
