Message from your Chamber

Greetings from your Chamber! We are already at the halfway mark this year and it was encouraging to hear several pieces of positive feedback recently about some of the things your Board set out to do in 2018. One of these was to improve and transform our communications, which we kicked off by beefing up our communications sub-committee with additional expertise drawn from our member base.

As a chamber, we have always done a reasonable job of communicating with our members. If anything, we have been mindful of too much communication, especially email. Even as we transformed Advance several years ago from a printed to an online edition, Austcham was steadily building a solid arsenal of digital assets including Facebook and LinkedIn.

In our view, digital transformation means that our communications can no longer be a narrow 2-lane channel between the chamber and members. One of the chamber’s primary functions is to connect our members, and our digital assets are potential ‘dot-joiners on steroids’ if used effectively.

Today, the feedback has been that we are seen as one of the leading chambers in embracing digital transformation through a content-led strategy. That’s code for your content. I hope you have noticed our monthly themes that serve as a platform for more varied, but more focused, content produced by our members.

Our theme for June is The Digital Space. Please do read three terrific articles from David Norcross, Managing Director, Lexicon Business Communications; Andrew McBean, CEO, PKF Holdings; and Sanjay Sachdev, Partner, Grant Thornton [link to articles]. As we progress our communications strategy, we hope that even more members leverage the chamber’s assets to tell their stories. For our part, the digital marketing experts on our sub-committee are working on how to amplify those stories to wider and more relevant audiences beyond our membership base. If we can do that well, then we will have transformed our communications from a mere corporate function to a valuable additional service for our members.

On the topic of The Digital Space, in May we held a “Facebook's Future: Your data and your business” breakfast forum, which we hope heralds the first in a series of digital marketing events in 2018 including workshops.

Of course, it’s not all about digital. Austcham is still engaged in a range of more familiar activities, including a Federal Budget update and Business Cocktail Reception in partnership with the Australian Embassy in May. And a full line up of activities once again ahead in June.

Wishing you a successful June ahead!"

It feels like only yesterday that people across continents, outraged by the company’s careless use of user data, banded together and in unison declared their intention to #deletefacebook. Articles swept the interwebs with how-to guides for deleting your account, and the brand itself was bruised and bloodied by the reputational costs of mismanagement. How would it ever recover?...
