Last month, Australia’s Prime Minister The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, welcomed ASEAN Leaders and the ASEAN Secretary–General to the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit. The Summit was a historic and unprecedented opportunity to strengthen Australia’ strategic partnership with ASEAN and to promote enhanced cooperation between countries. The program included a Business Summit which was attended by more than 100 high-profile CEOs from ASEAN and Australia who shared their insights about how to enhance economic cooperation and business outcomes in the region.

Over the past 20 years, ASEAN’s combined GDP has more than doubled, consumer spending has grown significantly, urbanisation and internet penetration have increased rapidly.  The number of ASEAN middle class is expected to reach 400 million by 2020.  The region’s cities are booming and an additional 90 million people are expected to move to urban areas by 2030.  At the same time, Australia has enjoyed a record 26 years of uninterrupted economic growth, fuelled by its diverse world-class industries and by being located close to one of the most dynamic high-growth regions of the world.  Now is the time for businesses in Australia and ASEAN to take advantage of the once–in–a-generation opportunity this region offers to further strengthen ties and commercial relationships.

AustCham Thailand is pleased to be hosting an ASEAN-Australia member briefing prior to the April Sundowners event, in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Bangkok and the Department of State Development, Government of South Australia.

H.E. Paul Robilliard, Australia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, will provide a brief overview of the ASEAN Australia Business Summit.  Leading business people from Thailand will also offer their views about future business trends and opportunities in ASEAN and with Australia.  This will be followed by a panel discussion and opportunities for Q&A.

AustCham would like to thank the Government of South Australia for their support;

Department of State Development, Government of South Australia

More than 300 businesses featuring 423 delegates participated in the 2017 outbound Business Mission program to 21 countries. 60 South Australian businesses became exporters; more than the South Australian Government’s economic priority target.

South Australian exports to South East Asia totalled approximately $2.4 billion. In 2017, 3 business missions to the Region were undertaken covering Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar focusing on developing mutual trade and investment opportunities in agriculture, food & wine, education & training, research & development, infrastructure, health & aged care, defence and manufacturing.

South Australia is, and always has been, outwardly focused. Now more than ever, the world is interconnected. Distance presents fewer barriers to communicating with and selling to the world. South Australian businesses can offer knowledge and expertise globally. These are the new horizons for South Australia.

The 2018 Investment and Trade Statement outlines what the South Australian Government is doing to ensure companies, communities and people are ready to embrace the opportunities. For comprehensive information of South Australia’s Investment and Trade Statement 2018, please click here.
